The Well-being of Children in Hungary

Child poverty and child well-being have, in recent decades, increasingly become part of strategies and practices in the field of social policy. 1 Following international (e.g. OECD, 2009; UNICEF, 2007; 2010) and specifically EU developments (e.g. Frazer and Marlier, 2007; EU Task-Force, 2008; TÁRKI-Applica, 2010; European Commission, 2012), in 2007 Hungary adopted the ‘Legyen jobb a gyermekeknek!’ (‘Let's Make Things Better for our Children’) National Strategy, which was integrated into the National Social Inclusion Strategy in 2011. Both initiatives placed a strong emphasis on the monitoring of social developments in the field, based on indicators of child poverty and well-being.
